The Marriage Market at Shanghai’s People’s Park

IMAG1466

This is a very famous weekend (maybe weekdays too!) gathering. Literally, scores of elderly and middle aged mums and dads, and grandparents, involved in what seems like ‘brokering’ marriages. There are a thousand pamphlets lined up hanging on the side of the pathways, and people lined up either sitting on the ground with umbrellas (giving them a mysterious aura) or in a table-chair set up, maybe telling fortunes of eager brides and grooms. Very few young folks of marriageable age. Think the pamphlets indicate the birthdays, and other details like height, weight, personal hobbies, career, etc of the candidates. Some have the photos as well. You can dig deeper about this concept in this CNN piece – http://travel.cnn.com/shanghai/life/people-behind-paper-846851. Very interesting.
