I was surprised to find this (slightly shady looking and smoke filled) restaurant – TIANLE – on Wanhangdu Lu, a stone’s throw from my house. Had to see what they serve up, so decided to have dinner here. I suspect they have a smoke free section upstairs. Food was decent, place very unkempt. Dinner ware was chipped/ broken. We still enjoyed the food overall, mainly because the appetizer – baby octopus with some pickled greens – was yummy and in large portions. It goes very well with scallion noodles. The flavours were just right, making this by far the most memorable octopus dish I have had in the last six months in Shanghai. Next time I will parcel (Ta Bao) this for home.
