Christmas in India is a big deal, and in a city like Mumbai, lots happens around Xmas. I’ve always loved Christmas, and , therefore, was convinced Shanghai will be amazing, with the added winter to complete the holiday feeling. I was, in fact, quite amazed. Nanjing West Road lights up way before December arrives, and looks stunning, with all sorts of lights adorning pavements and trees. Very beautifully done, in the way that makes you want to walk all along this road, with a mug of hot chocolate in your hands. Come December, and we have some very cool Christmassy stuff taking place across the city. Yesterday I had the pleasure of dropping into the last day of the 3-day Christmas market by Paulaner on Fuxing Lu. It was fabulous – complete with pizza, German sausages, hot chocolate and MULLED WINE, given out in cute ceramic cups. Lots of stalls set up selling some wonderful decoration items, and more. There are Christmas plays going on, Winter Happy Hours, Christmas stores at all the grocery stores (Gourmet, Carrefour, IFC Mall Shanghai Centre). Carrefour, in fact, has LOTS. If you’re looking for a tree without spending a bomb, go here. They also have a whole new selection of wines (so does Gourmet), and tons of decoration items.
I am still looking for string lights through. Caojiadu flower market on Wanhangdu Lu has real trees, as covered in my earlier post. I am planning to bake a plum cake if I can manage it, as well as try my hand at mulled wine maybe. More Xmas markets to be explored in the coming weekends.
