On Wanhangdu Lu – Zhenning Lu (where I live) is this popular crayfish joint (these are seen everywhere in Shanghai, with a caricature of a red crayfish as the logo). This place is of special interest to me because they stock up on the most amazing, monstrous looking crabs, lobsters, giant oysters, dangerous looking sea urchins and things that I can’t name.
Last night we wanted to have some oysters with beers, so went to this joint, and yeah, it’s not cheap. A regular oyster sells at 10 RMB a piece, and big one sells at 50 RMB (!!) a piece. We saw a mammoth spiked crab (some endangered species I’m sure) which was on sale for 900 RMB (faints).
I also got some snails (500 gms at 30 RMB) – which weren’t that good, still sandy and felt unclean. But the Sea Urchin, bbq’d with egg was nice at 30 RMB a pop. Their oysters are great. It’s a good thing I’m allergic to shell-fish (so no crab/ shrimp/ lobster expenses for me). Yeah, but if you live in Shanghai and need a sea-food fix, this is the joint to go to.
